2012 Script Lab

Following the success of last year’s event, Watersprite 2012 once again provideded student screenwriters with the opportunity to have their work critiqued by an industry expert through the Script Lab competition.

Thank you to Neil Hunter, writer of various award-winning screenplays and teacher at the London Film School, and to all of you that came to Script Lab 2012 for making it such an informative and engaging session. As those who attended may have noted, unfortunately Vanessa Leon, writer of Everleigh Yours was unable to make it to the session. Never ones to let an opportunity for new screenwriters go to waste, with the help of Neil Hunter we picked another winner, Tessa Nicholson, whose script Smithy took part in the session. We’ve uploaded this script to the archives so you can all see the high standard of scripts we received this year, and hopefully inspire you to start thinking of your own story to write for next year’s Script Lab!

Aurite Kouts, one of the winners of our Script Lab competition in 2011, submitted her revised script ‘Fur Coat’ to the Zagreb Jewish Film Festival talent workshop and it was selected to be made, so it’s a format that works!

All scripts had to meet the terms and conditions for entry which are:

  1. Scripts must be submitted by a student, who wrote the script in question no more than 2 years ago.
  2. Students are welcome to submit up to three scripts.
  3. Scripts must be no longer than 10 pages in length.
  4. Scripts must be in industry format (please see this page for more details and templates: Script Frenzy info)
  5. Scriptwriters must consent to having a protected PDF version of their scripts available for viewing on the Watersprite website 2 week before the festival weekend.
  6. Preferred format is PDF, but Word documents are also accepted.
  7. Scripts must not have already been made into a film, or in development for production.
  8. Participants must be prepared to travel to Cambridge for the festival weekend, if their script is chosen.

The Winners!

Here you can still read the scripts that were worked through by the wonderful Neil Hunter, in front of an audience, as a masterclass in short screenplay development. Good luck to the screenwriters for their future projects.
